Welcome to Rosa’s Black History, Past & Present. I’m Rosa Harrington, president of Youth Reading To Senior Citizens, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Each month, I will give you a quiz on Black history to help increase your interest and knowledge in the subject.

1) A Portuguese commanding officer described this warrior as a brave, intelligent and determined black queen. She tried to expand her kingdom and in 1624 she declared that all slaves who could reach her land, now known as Angola, would be free.

2) In 1986, this African-American woman founded the Black Family Reunion Celebration to reinforce the historic strengths and traditional values of the black family.

3) She made headlines by becoming the first African-American woman to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City in 1955.

4) In the 1890s, this African-American woman published “Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases” and “A Red Record,” documenting research on a lynching.

5) This African-American actress said that it is better to play a maid than to be one.

6) In 1896, she became the first African-American woman to graduate from a professional, all-white nursing school in the United States. By 1899, six other African-American women had also graduated.

7) This African-American woman worked as a volunteer nurse on the battlefront for four years during the American Civil War, tending to wounded soldiers. She received no pay and no pension for her services. In 1902, she published her memoirs, “Reminiscences Of My Life In Camp With The 33rd United States Colored Troops.”

8 ) She is the first woman to own and produce her own television talk show.

From women in politics to women in the environment, start planning your Women’s History Month events now with great resources from Gale.Farmington Hills, Mich., Feb. 17, 2009 – In recognition of Women’s History Month in March, Gale, part of Cengage Learning, is offering free resources and activities on its Women’s History Month Web site. The site includes activities that can make Women’s History Month more meaningful.  Activities are arranged by topics and include history, geography, music, science, literature and a number of other categories, showing the influence of women in those areas.   New downloadable bookmarks, calendar and screensaver are also available. From women of the past like Abigail Adams and Joan of Arc, to present day notables including Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, biographies of many influential women are included in the site’s biographies section (http://www.gale.com/free_resources/whm/bio/).  Each entry gives detailed information including birth date and location, details on personal life and career, and resources for further information.
