Exhibit at library features artist's local landscapes
"I'm a plein air painter. I work outside. My paintings are done wet-on-wet, working with a more traditional palette of seven colors and white. I prefer to mix my ochres, umbers and greens. This allows for fresh clean colors and immediacy, which working from nature initiates," he explained.
The exhibit features many beautiful scenes of the village including "Sunday Morning Walk," "Winter's Light" and "Sittin N Sippin." "No Time for Alice" was painted at the clock at Van Neste Square. "The Inn" at Saddle River , "Diamond Brook" at the Arboretum in Glen Rock , and "Old Mill House" in Allendale are all winter landscapes. There are other paintings of familiar scenes close to home: "The Gate" and "Early Morning Light" are both of Saddle River. "Reflections off the water are stunning in late autumn," said Terrone of "Harriman State Park."
His painting of the Paterson Falls is called "How Much Longer." "The rocks are pounded by the water constantly and made me wonder about how we face these stresses in our lives and end up surviving like the rocks," he explained.
"In the past, my painting was a means of expression, transferring my feelings into non-objective, emotionally charged abstract imagery, adding layers upon layers of textures, materials, colors and shapes," said Terrone. Beach scenes include: "Storm On Corolla" at the Outer Banks and "Island Beach State Park." "Morning Catch" showing an inlet off the Choptank River and "The Old House," were both painted in Cambridge, Md. Other landscapes are of "Boscobel" in the Hudson Valley and of Bennington, Vt. and Lambertville, N.J.
Terrone grew up in Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Museum, "My dad and I would sit down on Sunday morning with the comic strips and we would copy the characters from them. I thought my dad was so talented." He remembered it as a great bonding experience.
"I was moved by his ability and I wanted to take it further. I took an art class (advertising) in high school." He went to Kingsborough Community College for two years, and painted at Manhattan Beach where the school was located. Then at Brooklyn College he majored in representational drawing. To pursue his goal of teaching at a college, he earned a master's in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute. "I was accepted as a sculptor and then I changed my major the first year to painting.
