Victoria's Anderson wins Canadian Tour Championship

WINDSOR, Ont. -- Victoria's Stuart Anderson drained a 25-foot putt on the second playoff hole to beat Richard Scott of Kingsville, Ont., at the 2011 Canadian Tour Championship.

Anderson fired a final round 6-under 65 to post 21-under for the tournament, which was enough to force a playoff at the 7,000-yard Ambassador Golf Club.

Anderson's winning shot came just moments after he missed a 16-inch putt to seal the win on the first playoff hole.

Anderson picked up his fourth Canadian Tour win and second Tour Championship of his career, in addition to the $32,000 winner's purse.

"It feels wonderful to win this championship again," said Anderson who won the inaugural Tour Championship in 2006. "I love playing this game and I hope I can play it for a living for the rest of my life."

Scott held the lead for most of the round, but Anderson drew level when he sank a 70-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.

Scott wasn't able to move back into the lead after posting pars on his final three holes. The third round co-leader went on to bogey both playoff holes, disappointing many of the Windsor fans that were cheering loudly for the hometown favourite.

Scott took home just over $19,000.

"Overall I'm happy with how I played, I shot 21-under-par and it was a solid showing," said Scott, who grew up 45 minutes from downtown Windsor. "It never ceases to amaze me how supportive the Windsor area fans are to me and I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart.

If you have ever driven along Beach Drive in Victoria, you have more than likely driven past and noticed the Victoria Golf Club. Located on prime waterfront property, the Victoria Golf Club, at over 100 years old, is the oldest golf course in Canada. Not only is this course the oldest in Canada, it is also open for more days per year than any other course in Canada, thanks in large part to a recent $4 million drainage and irrigation upgrade, keeping the course as dry as possible during the notoriously wet Victoria winters.

Playing at Victoria Golf Club does not come cheap. If, like most people, you are not a member, 18 holes of golf will set you back $200. This also includes a pull cart, range balls, and access to Macan’s and heritage clubhouse. If you are thinking of becoming a member, be prepared to open your pockets wide (and sit on the wait list), as entrance fees alone can cost up to $35,000, not including annual and monthly dues. If you are able to play with a member, green fees become more reasonable, ranging from $55 to $75, depending on the time of year. The couse runs along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and offers breathtaking views and scenery of Mt. Baker and the ocean. If you’re lucky enough, you may even get to see a pod of killer whales swimming by as you tee up on the 9th hole. The Victoria Golf Club is a 6,170 yard par 70 course that will test even the most seasoned professionals. Especially in winter, the wind can play havoc on your game, and make a bogey seem like an eagle. Some of the greens are extremely tricky, like hole #5, which is a very small and narrow green with a large slope from back to front – you’ll be lucky to come away with a par. The Victoria Golf Club is a links style golf course, so some of the fairways can be forgiving on wayward tee shots.

When you play at Victoria Golf Club you can expect nothing but the best course conditions. It is always kept in top shape, with immaculate fairways and greens. The clubhouse includes a full service pro shop, guest lockers, and Macan restaurant. There are also putting and chipping greens and a warm-up practice range.
