Towing with or without brakes - Club Touareg Forums
I am towing fishing boat on Easy Loader trailer with my Touareg TDI. The whole rig is about 2300 lbs. According to Touareg manual I should have brakes on my trailer (anything above 1650 lbs) and with brakes I can tow 7700 lbs. More than that, they require using a particular size hitch receptacle shorter than any standard American-made one. The dealer says to do not worry about brakes and hitch. Anybody had any issues with do not worry advice? Installation of trailer brakes is costly (~$900) and not sure really doing any good for comparably light load. Generally speaking, if the trailer has not been equipped with brakes it is legal and considered safe to tow without them. My previous experience was with much bigger American-made SUVs namely Tahoe and Durango. These vehicles have larger diameter disks and as a result do have more breaking power than smaller disks used in Touareg. I have no doubts that the 4600 ## trailer has originally come with brakes, but most fishing boats of 16-19 feet length do come with trailers not equipped with brakes.
