San Jacinto River Authority looking at Trinity water
Now that the San Jacinto River Authority’s Groundwater Reduction Plan has been set into motion, experts are looking for projects that can meet Montgomery County’s future demand for water.
The Region H Planning Group advanced a number of strategies in its 2011 Regional Water Plan, including conservation, reuse and groundwater (either the use or lack thereof). But the SJRA has had discussions with the Trinity River Association about the purchase of approximately 76,500 acre-feet annually to serve Montgomery County.
By comparison, Lake Conroe’s current standard capacity is 100,000 acre-feet.
Acquisition of surface water from the TRA has gained importance since the Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District imposed a 30-percent reduction in the use of groundwater starting Jan. 1, 2016.
“We haven’t finalized negotiations with the Trinity folks,” Jace Houston, deputy general manager with the SJRA, said.
Mike Reedy, a water resources planner with the engineer firm of Freese and Nichols, is a consultant with Region H, one of 15 regional water planning groups across Texas. Region H includes at least the part of 16 counties in Houston region, including Montgomery County.
The 2011 water plan projects demand to increase from approximately 2.38 million acre-feet per year in 2010 to over 3.52
For more water, Reedy recommends the Houston look to the east and the Sabine River Authority near the Louisiana board.
“There’s still a lot of water but it’s not sitting where the people are,” he said. “We still have a groundwater resource.”
Region H included the indirect reuse strategy of Walden municipal utility districts 8 and 9 in its water plan.
There has been talk about about a second reservoir in the area – a smaller one located in far west of the county. But it has generated about the same public support as the proposed Bedias reservoir in Madison County.
The Bedias was to drain into the San Jacinto watershed.

Mandatory Water Restrictions Begin August 29 > City of Grapevine ...

Texas is experiencing the worst one-year drought in the state's history. No rain means our water supplies are declining and our outdoor watering habits play a big role in this decline. Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), the raw water supplier for almost all of Tarrant County including the Cities of Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield, and the Trinity River Authority (TRA) is requesting that all customer cities implement Stage 1 of their Drought Contingency Plan.
Grapevine will comply with TRWD’s request to implement Stage 1 of our Drought Contingency Plan effective August 29, 2011. This Stage 1 implementation is a result of the combined storage in TRWD reservoirs declining to 75% of the reservoirs’ capacity which is the trigger for Stage 1 implementation.
The goal of this measure is to conserve our water supplies until the reservoirs are replenished by rainfall and runoff.
With Stage 1 implementation, Grapevine will enact TRWD’s recommended watering schedule which includes an odd, even watering schedule.

Twice-per-week watering restrictions will be mandatory.
