We couldn't get our baby to fall asleep
She clenches the wooden bars of her crib and tears stream down her porcelain cheeks. Her wild screams start again, piercing the air as I close the door behind me.
Now she stands alone in the darkened room, rattling the bars while we huddle just outside the door. I clench my jaw and stare at the ground. Kate paces up and down the top two stairs. We can’t even look at each other.
The wailing continues and I start counting on my fingers. When I reach 10, I go back in.
Anna’s tear-stained face lights up. She flaps her arms and begs, “Daddy uppa. Daddy uppa.”
I indulge her with a brief hug, whisper words of comfort and wipe away the tears. Her breathing slows as I run my fingers through her hair and lay her back on the mattress.
“I’m going to leave now and you’re going to go to sleep on your own. I’ll be just outside.”
Her eyes dart around the room and her breathing quickens. I cradle her cheek in the palm of my hand one last time, then turn for the door.
It all starts again.
What kind of person would subject a 16-month-old to this kind of torment? And what kind of parent would do this to their own child?
After 35 minutes of counting crying intervals and resettling, the gaps between her screams start to lengthen. This is “progress.”
In a few more minutes the crying has stopped. I inch open the door to check if she is asleep, only to hear resigned sobbing.
People say hearing your baby scream is the most distressing sound. I beg to differ – the worst is the quiet sobbing when they’ve given up. At least screaming implies hope.
When it’s over and Anna is asleep, Kate and I console each other with a half-hearted hug. Our guilt remains but the relief is palpable.
This was night five of our new bedtime routine. It was slightly quicker than the last, but how long would the tears go on?
Settling your child to sleep is one of the most debated parenting topics. At one extreme are the co-sleepers who share a bed with their children, often for several years. At the other are those who put newborns in their cribs and walk away.
The No Cry Sleep Solution - News

We'd read various books promising no-cry sleep solutions and simple steps to sleeping through the night. None worked. Every night we'd hurry to bed by 9:30 and alternate settling shifts. These would last anywhere between a few minutes to two hours.

I have a really hard time even thinking about the “cry it out” method. It just seem so sad. But I'm beginning to wonder if that'll be the only way he'll learn to fall asleep on his own. What do you think about night time sleep?
Being unbreakable doesn't mean that you can't cry or need to act tough or mask your feelings by putting on a happy face. Being unbreakable means you give yourself the freedom to break, knowing you have the tools to put yourself back together again.
