John Blair Chesterley, 96, died Friday, August 12, 2011. He was born November 2, 1914, in Yakima, WA, the son of the late John Frederick Chesterley and Helen (Greene) Chesterley and husband of the late Betty (Cowan) Chesterley, who died in 1993. He was also predeceased by his two brothers, James I. Chesterley of Nashua, NH, and Frederick D. Chesterley of Blaine, WA.

John graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Fisheries. During World War II, John lived on Bainbridge Island and worked as a welder at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. After the war, until his retirement, John fished in Alaska, becoming captain of the tender boat, Saturn, off the Aleutian Chain. He spent summers working in Alaska and winters at the family homestead on Bainbridge Island.

In the 1960's, John pieced together a tree farm in North Kitsap and enjoyed working there for the rest of his life. John was an active and valuable member of the Washington Farm Forestry Association.

John is survived by two nieces, Vivian H. Chesterley of Bainbridge Island, who cared for him during the last years of his life, and Victoria L. Chesterley of Nashua, NH, and two nephews, Eric K. Chesterley of Comox, BC and David B. Chesterley of Brookline, NH. He is also survived by three great nieces, two great nephews and three great-great nieces. At his request, no services will be held, but donations in his memory may be made to the Olympic Chapter of the Washington Farm Forestry Association.

I didn’t know much about video games. There are some awfully violent ones. But Heavenly Sword (2007) (VG) is different. I’ve had huge conversations with a friend who made it. I think what he wants to do is to make the player care. Yes, there’s killing. But the character I play in “Heavenly Sword”, “Nariko”, is ultimately protecting her family and this runaway girl. It’s a beautiful game. It’s beyond a video game. The landscape is to protect and to care. My friend is working toward a world where you get an emotion out of the people who are playing it. See if you can make them cry if they couldn’t save the people who they were trying to protect. This isn’t “Pac-Man”.
