The trouble with a runny nose
Not all running noses are a sign of simple cold. Often symptoms like nasal congestion, sneezing bouts, runny noses, post-nasal drip and fatigue could actually be nasal bronchial allergy. Unfortunately, most people don’t get these symptoms diagnosed. Rajesh Bhardwaj, head ENT, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon, says during winter, and also during change of season, there is a sharp rise in the number of patients who come with this allergy.
No respite: A common cold should ease off in three to five days. If it does not, see a doctor.
“The smoggy, foggy weather is very conducive to these allergies in people who are prone,” says Atul Mittal, ENT consultant, Max Healthcare, Delhi. “Very often this disease is underestimated and misdiagnosed as seasonal cough or cold. Misdiagnosis leads to a large percentage of patients missing out on proper treatment that is essential to prevent it from developing into bronchial asthma and other long-term bronchial complications like lung allergy.”The ABC of allergy
“The nasal tract is the first to get exposed to airborne allergens and pollutants and this leads to episodes of wheezing and shortness of breath. When this happens, it may appear as common cold when it first begins, but the differentiator is that the symptoms for nasal bronchial allergy persist whereas a common cold eases off after a while on its own,” explains Dr Bhardwaj. A common cold eases off in three to five days; a doctor should be consulted for anything that lasts longer than that.
Allergic nose symptoms typically include itching, sneezing and watery nasal discharge. “In case you develop fever, body ache, thick nasal discharge, cheek pain and headache, you probably have a cold or some flu,” Bhardwaj says.
Dr Mittal adds that chronic cough, irritable cough at night, asthmatic wheezing chest congestion and watery discharge (not thick and discoloured as is the case with cold) are the telltale signs of allergy. “It is only when a secondary infection (any other infection such as viral, bacterial, etc.) takes over that symptoms like throat pain and headache, etc., get added on,” he adds.
