Healthy Living: 'It was scary as it came from nowhere'
ALLIE Langham do not think the brand pinprick on the head of her newborn daughter.
It was, after all, just a little point - not even a scratch. And Ruby, her daughter was just good old days.
But that dot up. And grew.
Allie, 41, of Aston, remembers it well. "It looked like a shot - as if someone had the end of a ballpoint pen and marked his face. We just thought she had smothered her skin during labor and thought of nothing. But the point grew rapidly and alarmingly so."
Within a week, barely visible mark on the baby's head had reached a mass Ruby red, one inch high, shaped volcano.
A month later, another pinprick appeared, this time on his face. A few weeks later the place was expanded and by the time Ruby had three months she had an injury to pink-red on her cheek the size of a large pea.
"It was scary - especially the bump on the head - as he came out of nowhere," said Allie.
"She must have an MRI when she was 10 months, when one on top of his head reaches its maximum height."
MRI showed signs of Ruby were benign. In fact, its capital was what is called a strawberry naevus - or in his case, strawberry naevi. These curious skin-tag-like marks occur in one in ten children.
"We had never heard of a strawberry nevus before, but the doctor was so matter of fact about it, it made us feel much better. But the fact that it is quite common not alter the fact it is very visible and very ugly. "
