Preview: Pokemon Trading Card Game Online
15 years later, Pokemon is still one of the biggest and most successful gaming franchises in the world. What separates the Pokemon franchise from others of it’s type is that it refuses to rest on it’s laurels and coast along on name recognition alone. To put it in the terms fans of the series will be familiar with, the franchise is constantly evolving.
Speaking to J.C. Smith, the Director of Consumer Marketing for The Pokemon Company International, took time to explain to me the next step in the Pokemon initiative, which is aiming to take the classic trading card game and bring it online.
“Pokemon was absolutely huge when it was introduced 15 years ago, and it is still a huge property today. In fact, it is the No.2 gaming property in the world behind ‘Super Mario Bros.’ We’ve produced 15 billion cards and the next logical step was to go online,” Smith said.
The move to take the Pokemon Trading Card Game online was one that had been a long time coming. Smith described the process and logic behind bringing the game to the masses via the Internet.
“We have a very robust community and the last several years we have been trying to evolve our online world. Our demographic wants to have fun with the brand and the online service will be one of those paths to enjoying.
“We want to encourage the social interaction, fans getting together to either just chat or to play,” Smith said.
What Smith stressed about the initiative, is that it is an “online service” and that it will provide fans an avenue to learn, play and compete.
“The key thing to take away from the service is that we wish to provide the player with an opportunity to learn the game, practice the game and play the game,” Smith said.
The online version of the trading card game will offer players the ability to learn the rules and structure of the game, rather than just using the cards as collector’s items. Through the Learn, Practice and Play features, players will be able to educate themselves, practice against a robust CPU opponent and compete against other players in the Pokemon community.
