The Broke and the Beautiful: Sports Edition
By Melanie CohenThis week on The Broke and the Beautiful, sports news abounds. The estate of the late crooner Frank Sinatra wants a voice in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ future, the Texas Rangers’ former owner faces a lawsuit, and the New York Mets’ owners may need to give at least $300 million to the trustee chasing down recoveries for Bernard Madoff’s investment-fraud victims. Meanwhile, football player Mark Brunell is hoping to leave bankruptcy soon, and actor Burt Reynolds may lose his home to foreclosure.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have many fan bases, notably the estate of Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. According to Reuters , the estate wants to dance cheek to cheek with four other season-ticket holders, asking a bankruptcy judge to let them team up for an official voice in the Dodgers’ future. Sinatra’s family has held Dodgers season tickets since 1958, when the team moved to Los Angeles from Brooklyn, N.Y.
Separately this week, Reuters noted that Chief Financial Officer Peter Wilhelm said the team has dodged paying or lending money to owner Frank McCourt for the past two years. Wilhelm also said McCourt invested $23.5 million in the team leading up to its bankruptcy, which Wilhelm blamed on a “perfect storm” of events that hurt the team’s finances.
The Texas Rangers’ post-bankruptcy administrator sued Tom Hicks Monday, saying the team’s former owner “stole” millions of dollars to obtain “highly lucrative” parking lots near the Rangers’ Arlington stadium. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram , Alan Jacobs also accused Hicks of making the ballclub spend at least $18 million on parking lots and roads instead of funding deferred compensation for players.
Another sports team once in bankruptcy, the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, may be swinging closer to a sale. According to the Phoenix Business Journal , Greg Jameson, the former San Jose Sharks president and chief executive, is planning to bid for the hockey team and keep its members playing in Arizona. The team, which the NHL bought out of bankruptcy in 2009, has dealt with a bevy of bids that never scored, including offers from Ice Edge Holdings LLC and Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf.
