Cross-border political row breaks out over superbug infection figures

A CROSS-BORDER political row has broken as the Conservatives blamed Labour in Wales for more women dying from a hospital superbug.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics revealed sharp falls in the number of deaths from MRSA and Clostridium difficile in England and Wales last year.

But there was a small rise in the rate of female deaths from C diff in Wales between 2009 and 2010 – up from 57.4 per million population to 59.5. This compares to a rate of just 23.5 in England.

It is not known why the rate has risen in Welsh women – it fell in men, as it did in England.

But the Tories said it was indicative of the “worsening services patients are experiencing in Labour-run Wales”.

Dr Daniel Poulter, Conservative MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and a member of the health select committee, said: “The NHS has gone backwards under Labour compared with clear improvements to NHS care in England under the coalition government.”

A source close to Health Minister Lesley Griffiths said: “We’ll take no lectures from a Tory party presiding over waiting lists for hospital treatment that are growing inexorably month by month and NHS reforms that no-one agrees with nor wants.

“We know from a recent BMA survey that Welsh doctors are pleased to be practising medicine in Wales in light of the proposed reforms to the NHS in England. The NHS in Wales holds true to its founding principles – providing care free at point of delivery.

“In May this year, the people of Wales overwhelmingly rejected Tory plans for marketisation and more competition and backed Labour’s vision instead.

“What the Tories in London think is quite frankly irrelevant.”

It is thought the overall downward trend in superbug infection-related deaths reflects the focus on reducing the number of healthcare associated infections in the NHS.

New weapon in battle against C-diff as scientists work out how to stop its poisons

Once the 'friendly' bacteria are killed off, the C diff are able to multiply and produce poisons which cause diarrhoea and, in the worst cases, a potentially fatal infection of the abdomen. The spread of the bacterium, via hardy spores,

The number of C diff cases has also dropped by 16% during the month, from 2001 in June 2010 to 1681. Labour enforced compulsory monitoring of hospital infections in 2001 following outrage over the number of patients being infected with MRSA and C

Copper Cuts Hospital Infection

A UK hospital trial making use of copper surfaces has proved it can cut bacteria via up to 95% compared to other supplies such as stainless steel and plastic.

The UK trial-which is getting mirrored in other nations including the US and Japan-replaced products which include taps, door push-plates, grab handles, a toilet seat and bedside trolleys with copper or copper alloys and measured the final results above six months.

The trial was performed at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham the moment all the Door Handles and Touch Plates had been replaced with the Copper Alloy the outcomes showed that the copper surfaces even killed the drug resistant-and deadly-MSRA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) superbug inside of 5 minutes of speak to.

Ideal Scientific in conjunction with Southampton University has offered the optical and revolutionary technological innovation enabling Southampton’s Environmental care unit with the Use of the specialist microscope that has been constructed by means of Dr Eric Most effective of Very best Scientific 1 of 4 Systems presently at Southampton to achieve this new break via in decreasing the survival rates of deposits of pathogens (which includes MRSA, C-Diff, Acinetobacter Baumannii, Ecoli, Listeria, monocytogenes, Influenza A and Aspergilus niger in a dry environment on stainless steel, the metal most employed in wellness care and processing institutions.

The trial performed in conjunction with Selly Oak Hospital Birmingham is primarily based upon the clinical trials performed at Southampton University through Professor Bill Keevils Environmental Wellness Care Unit. The research identified that the moment tested products produced of Copper had up to 95% fewer Micro Organinisms on them compared with the very same objects manufactured out of stainless steel, primarily based on this facts Selly Oak eliminated all stainless steel handles and touch plates and replaced them with copper. This has been performed above the last year hence enabling them to cut down Infection inside the hospital environment. Most effective Scientific are the innovators of this imaging strategy recognized as EDIC (Episcopic Differential Interference Contrast) which is also at this time patented and enables topography of a surface to be imaged and analysed.
