Testing and teacher pay

Before the budget battles begun in Washington, many school districts had difficulty with funding and also the raising of student achievement.

With the recent revelations of widespread teaching in the Atlanta and now Philadelphia school districts' cheating scandal, student achievement and merit pay are again in the spotlight, and the pressures brought tobear on teachers With The No Child Left Behind Act which was passed under President Bush.

School choice, smaller classes, recruitment bonuses to attract higher top rank college graduates, and hiring those with professional degrees should all be tried. In top ranked Finland all teachers have Master's degrees and are chosen from top 10% of their classes. A rethink of choosing mainly teachers with education degrees and those with state certificates only should be challenged, along with the way that school districts are funded.

If tests are to be used to determined merit pay then it is logical that teaching to the test would occur. Teaching to the test is often presented in a negative light, but it can improve student performance and teach students test-taking skills. Test taking skills are very important for the varied acronyms of testing in the USA such and SAT, ACT, LSAT, and MCAT.

Test taking skills can be translated to job skills, and teach students critical thinking and understanding what the examiners are asking. The good thing about calls for reform is that rather than focusing on celebrities and athletes, many are focusing on student achievement.

Admissions Tip: LSAT Tips « Clear Admit: Law School Admissions ...

With much of the law school admissions process focused on the LSAT, today we’d like to offer some advice to make the process of enrolling and studying for, as well as taking, the test, as painless as possible:

1. Obtain an LSAT Fee Waiver. Everyone taking the LSAT must pay a $136 fee, mandated by the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC ), the organization that officially organizes and administers the LSAT.  However, LSAC offers need-based fee waivers that cover the entire cost of the test, allowing examinees to take two LSATS within two calendar years, as well as use the LSAC Credential Assembly Services for free.  Interested test-takers must submit an application at least six weeks before the registration deadline for their intended LSAT test.  This application can be obtained on LSAC’s website and submitted online or through mail.  The application must include proper documentation that demonstrates that the examinee is fully unable to pay the LSAT fee.

2. Register Online. Although test-takers can sign up for the LSAT online or through telephone or mail-in registration, signing up online has several advantages.  First, by signing up online , examinees will be able to view current test center availability, ensuring that they obtain their preferred test center location.  In addition, examinees who register online receive their scores automatically and free of charge via e-mail, approximately three weeks after taking the test.  Examinees who sign up via telephone or mail may not receive their first choice of test location, and also have to wait longer and pay a fee to receive their LSAT scores.

3. Treat Yourself. Although the rules about what examinees can bring into the testing room are strict, all test-takers are allowed to bring a beverage and snack that can be consumed during the designated break time.  Although this beverage and snack must be sealed and able to be contained within a ziplock bag with your other supplies, many test-takers enjoy having a power snack that helps them power through the rest of the test!
