Hurricane Irene loses some steam, but is still expected to pound NJ

Lost in a sea of mass evacuations and panicked preparations Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Irene’s arrival was the faintest glimmer of hope — it lost some of its punch.

Though Hurricane Irene is still a massive, dangerous storm, it ran into the equivalent of Kryptonite for storms: dry air.

Irene hit drier pockets of air over the Atlantic Ocean Friday as it approached North Carolina, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity. Hurricanes gain their power from moist warm air. They hate dry.

But given what New Jersey is still facing, that’s hardly a silver lining.

Irene is still expected to pound New Jersey as a Category 1 hurricane as it skirts the state’s coastline from Sunday morning through the afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center.

"It’s the triple-header we’re facing here," said David Robinson, the state climatologist at Rutgers University. "It’s the coastal impacts, it’s the flooding rains and it’s the potential wind damage that make this a real menace."

As of late Friday night, Irene was classified as a Category 2 storm, carrying winds that could reach as high as 110 miles per hour.

Both the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office and Robinson said the potential exists statewide for record-setting rains, major river flooding and winds that could cause widespread power outages.

"Heavy tropical rains will begin well before the arrival of the center. A huge amount of moisture will surge inland from the strengthening onshore flow," wrote the Mount Holly office in its evening weather discussion.

The storm, because of its massive size, could also push several feet of water onshore, particularly along the southern New Jersey coastline. The storm is expected to arrive alongside high tide, meaning any flooding produced by Irene is likely to worsen.

Farther north, where tides will be lower when the eye of the storm passes near noon, experts put a 20 percent chance of major coastal flooding occurring from Raritan Bay north to Hoboken.
