Lake Bluff car showrooms are great spots to stop after long drive

Early last week, I left Lake Forest with two friends and headed west for our annual camping and fishing trip. After more than 20 hours of driving we arrived at our camp site near the Lolo Pass in the Bitterroot Mountains on the border of Montana and Idaho. Lewis and Clark used this route 190 years ago, and we estimated that our tents were pitched less than a mile from where the Corps of Discovery had passed through this wilderness.

It is still rough country with all of the natural beauty that inspired the dedication of nearby Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. We camped at an elevation of 5,100 feet. Even in mid-August, the night-time temperatures dipped below 30 degrees, and we were glad that we brought our four-season tents and sleeping bags.

Luxurious ride

We made the trip in my Mercedes Benz GL350 which we purchased from Knauz this spring. The silver SUV gets its power from a 3.0 liter six cylinder diesel engine that is rated to produce 210 horsepower. Because diesels generate significant torque, our nearly three ton vehicle, loaded with almost a ton of people and gear, made short work of the mountains.

The GL is luxurious and roomy. We averaged 27 miles per gallon over the trip in spite of this vehicle’s published 21 mile per gallon EPA highway rating. With all wheel drive and high ground clearance, the GL is perfect for getting to the camp site.

We got back to Lake Forest on Sunday night. As is our custom, my traveling companions stayed over Monday before returning to the East Coast. We used the day to do some automotive window shopping and there is no better place for this than along routes 41 and 43 in Lake Bluff. This little community of car dealers is an automotive enthusiast’s virtual candy store.

Our first stop was at Imperial Motors, Lake Bluff’s Jaguar dealer. Even though Jaguar has historically produced some of the most visually exciting, high performance sports cars and two seaters, our attention was drawn to the new silver Jaguar XJL sedan in the middle of the show room floor.
