Bowhunting authority recommends sticking to the basics

As editor of Petersen's Bowhunting, the nation's largest bowhunting magazine, Christian Berg has hunted wild hogs in Florida, turkeys in Texas, elk in Kentucky and even caribou on Quebec's tundra.

For Berg's many adventures, the whitetail woods of Pennsylvania will always hold a special place in his heart. This fall, as in autumns past, the Tamaqua area resident spent time perched in treestands from patches of woods overlooking Schuylkill County farmland to woodlots in the Lehigh Valley.

One might assume that since he is the main man at one of the world's premier archery magazines his backpack would be filled with the latest and greatest archery equipment, accessories and gadgets.

Well, not exactly.

"I actually try to keep it pretty simple," Berg said. "I have a little mental checklist and it's extremely short.

"Given the time of the season, there are a number of things that I'll take, but when it comes right down to it, the only things I really worry about are making sure I have the bow, arrows with broadheads, the release, rangefinder and my license for the hunt I'm doing. Because if you have just those bare essentials, you can go out and kill something."

As someone who hunts primarily with a bow, Berg is a strong believer in owning a quality range finder to help assess distances while in the field.

"I always have my rangefinder around my neck, and I recommend to fellow bowhunters who still haven't shelled out the $100-150 needed for a good laser rangefinder should seriously consider doing that," Berg said. "Hunters put a lot of time into getting close enough to a good buck or a nice doe that to fill the freezer.

"They're only going to get maybe two or three opportunities over the course of the whole season to make a shot. It is a real shame to let one of those pass because of not being sure exactly how far away it is to the animal."

Depending on the day or the time of the season, calls, rattling packs and even the occasional scent attractant make their way in and out of Berg's backpack. But he always packs a source of high energy to ward off hunger while in the tree and his choice is a "Wilderness Athlete Protein Bar." One thing he does to save space in his pack is use a headlamp instead of a handheld flashlight because it also allows him to keep his hands free for climbing in and out of his treestand and getting his equipment ready for the hunt.
