Houston property contamination lawyers Kurt Arnold and Jason Itkin today endorsed a U.S. Department of Energy recommendation that oil and gas companies quit using diesel fuel in "fracking" fluid because it includes carcinogenic chemicals.
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a drilling technique that involves pumping a variety of chemicals into wells to break up shale rock and release natural gas formations. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Natural Gas Subcommittee recently recommended a variety of measures to lessen the environmental impact of fracking, including the elimination of diesel from the hydraulic solution.
“Diesel fuel is full of carcinogenic chemicals, and it is obvious that it does not belong in our groundwater,” said Arnold, an experienced Houston trial lawyer who has handled property contamination cases throughout Texas, Louisiana and the Gulf Coast.
“Particularly in times of drought, chemicals put in the ground through fracking make up a far larger percentage of groundwater contamination, and the detriment to safety grows exponentially,” Arnold said.
Fracking is used in virtually every Gulf Coast oil and gas field, including the extensive Eagle Ford Shale project in South Texas. Another major natural gas exploration region is the Barnett Shale near the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
The subcommittee report also calls for full disclosure of all fracking fluid ingredients, stricter rules for disposal of used fracking fluid, raised standards for air pollution and greenhouse gases associated with drilling and creation of a federal database to enable the public to monitor drilling operations.
“We would prefer to see the industry step up and show its concern for safety and protection of the environment, which includes property that has belonged to families for generations,” said Jason Itkin, a veteran Houston trial attorney .
