Washburn School District levy to decrease 12 percent

WASHBURN — Washburn School District residents Monday approved a tax levy of $3.238 million for the 2011-12 budget, a decrease of 12.15 percent over last year's levy of $3.686 million. The levy taxes to the maximum the increase approved by voters three years ago in a referendum allowing the district to exceed revenue cap limits. The district is now in the third of three years of increases approved in that referendum. In addition, Washburn will experience an increase in enrollment for the first time in well over a decade, from 538 students to 563 projected for this fall. The increase is from the students gained from the closing of St. Louis School and while the increase will help the district over time. It won’t help this year due to the way the school formula works, Schlichting said. Other good news: the buildings are sound and the high school has been given a full makeover this summer. Students will return to a banner announcing the high school, painted lockers and a patched roof. Everyone from Schlichting to board president Christina Sauer acknowledged the work by Brad Dryer, director of buildings and grounds, and his crew. The remaining $10,000 derives from a small number of people with bills ranging from $400 to $1,200, some going back three or four years, she said. Gazdik said she has attempted contact through mail and telephone messages multiple times without any response. She asked the board for guidance on whether to pursue collection through an agency or through small claims court for “the ones that are ignoring all communication,” she said. Residents entered the high school under its new banner Monday for the budget hearing and annual meeting. The board and administrators commended the buildings and grounds crew for all of the improvements to the high school this past summer. "It's an amazing job from what I saw last spring to now," said high school principal Tom Wiatr. "It's quite impressive.

The filter popped off from the battery cover once though, so I just went to my audie's office and they put in a new one, no big deal. The booklet says to change the filters at least every 3 months, but I would think that depends on what the weather is like in your area and that sort of thing.
