deadline by chris crutcher
During a routine sports physical just before his senior year, Ben Wolf finds out he has one year to live. He swears the doctor to secrecy, refuses treatment, doesn’t tell anyone about his diagnosis. Ben then decides to do everything he always wanted to do including playing football, pursuing his long-time crush, and petitioning to have the main street in his small town named after Malcolm X, all the while conversing through dreams with a spiritual guide known as “Hey-Soos.”
TO GET YOU STARTED… What do you think about Ben’s decision to keep his diagnosis from family and friends? Would you want a friend or a family member to tell you if he or she was given Ben’s diagnosis? What do you think you would have done if you were in Ben’s position? Explain. Who do you think Hey-Soos is? What does Hey-Soos do for Ben? What’s your approach to life? If you had to summarize a personal motto for yourself, what would it be? Do you think it would be different if you had a deadline? Explain. What is a person’s legacy? What is Ben’s? What do you hope that yours will be? READ ALIKES Ben hiding his deadline from his family and friends emanates the idea of selfishness. It is a universal theme for a major character in a plot to be selfish, as long as that selfishness has good intentions to bolster it. In Ben’s case, this is selfishness with good intention. still, hiding his secret engenders internal complications with living the remainder of his life to its zenith. For instance, Ben’s family becomes somewhat suspicious of his newfound blithe and confident nature. His friends also gain suspicion but deem it nul and void do to a rekindled love of Ben’s enthusiasm. If a family member had a fatal disease like Ben, I would yearn to know; for if that family member passed away without warning, it would merely yield grievous feelings and mourning. However, if the family member informed me pre-mortem, I would help that person make the rest of their life jubilant and exuberant. Now if I was in Ben’s situation, I would immediately commit suicide. It may sound harsh, but I think of it simply as ridding the world of one defective person so that a “normal” person may replace me. Besides, I believe that the world will just continue without me and that one human being out of an entire population has little value, especially if that one person is crippled, faulty, or defective in a major manor.Gym Candy Crutcher - Bookshelf
