Presidents Felipe Calderón and Laura Chinchilla highlighted the excellent level of relations between the two countries, characterized by mutual respect and shared values to strengthen democracy, human rights, the promotion of cooperation and international peace. 2. They declared that the deep friendship between the Mexican and Costa Rican peoples and governments has made it possible to identify significant coincidences, including the conviction that the consolidation of democracy and the reinforcement of democratic institutions is a key objective for the region. These principles constitute a key feature of their foreign policies. 3. The presidents of Mexico and Costa Rica expressed their pleasure over the passage on 21 August 2011 of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Mexico and Costa Rica.
