Rick Perry: Meeting another GOP hopeful in Iowa
LOS ANGELES , August 18, 2011—Several days ago I had the honor and privilege of meeting Texas Governor Rick Perry.
While I am publicly neutral in the race, a ten day swing through Iowa provided the opportunity to meet virtually all of the presidential candidates. Governor Perry made his announcement on Saturday in South Carolina, yet still managed to receive over 700 write-in votes at the Iowa straw poll. He instantly vaulted into the top tier, challenging the frontrunner.
Two nights later at a private home in Cedar Rapids, Governor Perry addressed a large crowd. Yet unfortunately for him and me, I was speaking at a competing event that night a few miles away.
Given that I scheduled my event first, I figured that Governor Perry would simply cancel his remarks to have everybody come and hear me. Shockingly enough, this did not happen. His remarks were to begin around 6:30pm, mine only thirty minutes later.
Only about fifteen to twenty people were expected to hear me speak, but canceling on people is not acceptable. I was able to get word to my audience that I would be running a bit late. Luckily they had business to handle before my arrival.
Governor Perry arrived, and shook hands with people. He came across as serious and earnest, a man on a mission. While I am usually lighthearted, I had a message for him as well.
“Governor Perry, I live in California. Please steal every single business we have until there is nothing left. We deserve it.”
He let me know this would be fine with him, but I wanted to provide emphasis.
“Until we lose every single business we will not learn. The only way my home state will get it is when absolutely nothing is left. Take it all sir, every bit of it.”
He was very genial, and I was fine with leaving it at that. He was there to meet Iowa people, and did not need a Californian taking up his time. Plus, I had my own event to get to. I made sure to let his people know why I was leaving because I did not want to be seen as disrespectful.

The next night I actually incorporated Governor Perry into my remarks at a different speaking engagement. Again, Governor Perry had a scheduling conflict. Apparently running for President requires he attend his own events rather than mine.

As previously noted, Harvard Law School is a rarity in the legal academy in that it unofficially bifurcates faculty members who are hired to teach and those hired because they are recognized rock stars (or potential rock stars) who do offer courses (even 1L courses) but are essentially members of the HLS faculty to retain and enhance Harvard Law's reputation by scholarly publications and by being players on the national, even international, stage. Stanford Law's Faculty Director, Miller Institute for Global Challenges and the Law and Professor of Law, John Yoo, is both a recognized scholar and has been a player on the national stage.
