Hillsong United's arena performance marked by reverent, exuberant crowd

GRAND RAPIDS — An evening with the worship band Hillsong United is filled with music, but also exuberance, reverence, joy, prayer and inspiration.

It’s worship of all types wrapped up in a single evening.

And more than 6,000 gathered at Van Andel Arena Monday for their worship encounter were saying “Amen.”

Singer-songwriter Joel Houston is the leader of this assembled band that emerged from the youth movement at Hillsong Church, now a huge system of churches based in Australia.

The “Aftermath” tour is titled for the band’s most recent album, issued earlier this year. The players performed more than a half dozen songs from the release, including the ballad “Like An Avalanche,” and the shining “Nova” with its call for the glory of God to arise.

Three large screens displayed song lyrics as well as live concert scenes and some concept footage.

Enough of their songs are sung in contemporary churches that a good chunk of the audience didn’t need the lyrics on the screen to sing along.

Two of the other lead singers (Jonathan “JD” Douglas and Jad Gillies) also took turns with solo work. Among the songs led by Gillies were “Rhythms of Grace” and “Everything I Need.”

Douglas was the most active of the singers, prancing around on the platform most notably during the frantic “Take It All” the players offered during their encore.

He also led the audience in a salvation prayer.

Likely the most recognizable song for the audience — which featured a surprising age range — was “Mighty to Save,” a modern hymn popularized and sung by several other artists and also commonly sung in churches.

Whether uptempo or ballad in style, Hillsong United music is melodically attractive and easily learned and repeated. Their lyrics are based on scripture. Often a Bible verse appeared on the large screen for emphasis on its connection to the song.
