X Factor judge Kelly Rowland fulfils her destiny with a new solo album

In the suite of a London hotel, Kelly Rowland’s record label rep has been frustratedly fiddling with the air conditioning for the past five minutes.

“I just can’t get it any hotter. I will need to call maintenance before Kelly gets here,” he says. I inwardly roll my eyes. Celebrities and their mollycoddling. What are they like?

Moments later, however, I’m thoroughly self-chastised as Rowland arrives emitting a huge wracking cough and clutching a handful of balled-up tissues. She is clearly under the weather. As she settles on the sofa, an assistant is dispatched to rustle up more tissues, hand sanitiser and a hot toddy (“My grandmother’s recipe with lots of honey,” the singer implores).

Dressed down in jeans and a white T-shirt, a grey Louis Vuitton scarf wrapped around her neck, Rowland speaks huskily between coughs, dabbing at her nose with a hanky, apologising for being so ill. “I barely slept,” she says. “I’ve been under the weather for almost a week now, still working but not feeling great. Other than that I’m blessed, I can’t complain.”

The past few years have seen Rowland attempt to claw her way back from the brink of the showbiz wilderness, striking out on her own after global hit-making machine Destiny’s Child split, parting company from her childhood manager and being dogged by rumours of a fierce rivalry with former bandmate Beyonce Knowles. During 2011, Rowland has managed to pull off an impressive 360, landing one of the hottest TV gigs as an X Factor judge and serving up a pretty decent offering in the form of her third solo album Here I Am.

Asked to reflect on that tough era before The X Factor, Rowland seems determined to remain philosophical. “It was a period of transition,” she says in her rich Southern drawl. “It’s funny how rumours start when people don’t know exactly what is going on in your life. That is a part of being in the music industry – period. People figure they know everything about you. People will talk. You need to have a thick skin.
