Hurricane Irene damages cruise lines' private islands
Hurricane Irene damaged Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Norwegian Cruise Line's Great Stirrup Cay when the storm passed through the Bahamas yesterday. The Disney Cruise Line has also rerouted one ship, allowing time to inspect facilities at Castaway Cay, its private island.
In addition, at least two cruises have been extended, keeping passengers at sea an extra day until the storm passes -- and shaving a day off cruises for those scheduled to depart this weekend.

Royal Caribbean said it did not yet know when cruise ships would be able to return to its private island. "We have a Miami-based team heading to CocoCay as we speak," Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said in an e-mail. "Once they arrive, we'll have a better idea of the damage."
Norwegian also said its island received some damage. "We have a team out there right now assessing the island," spokeswoman Amanda Graham said in an e-mail. "We will be able to give an update on Monday."
The islands are used by the cruise lines as private beach stops, providing passengers an opportunity for watersports, adventure activities and lounging.
As Irene approaches the East Coast, it has already snarled weekend cruise schedules .

Celebrity Summit will stay in Bermuda until 5 p.m. today and won't arrive in its homeport of Bayonne, N.J., until Monday, Aug. 29, a day later than scheduled. Because of the late arrival, Summit's next sailing will be delayed until Monday. Norwegian Gem will remain at sea on Sunday instead of returning to New York as scheduled. The ship will arrive in New York at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29.
