Cross-Country Skiing at Anthony Lakes is a Great Oregon Escape
There are many opportunities for Nordic fans who want to enjoy some cross-country skiing in Oregon. There are the big resorts on Mount Hood that offer Nordic trails or tracks, in addition to their other operations. More secluded areas that cater only to the cross-country enthusiast are plentiful as well. There are numerous areas where you can park your vehicle, get out, and just put in.
A resort that offers the features of a managed area, but with a lower trail use and the chance to get more remote is Anthony Lakes in eastern Oregon . It's not close to any city, and you can almost feel like you are back in the Old West at times. On the plus side, it's easy to get to. The resort is only 19 miles off Interstate 84, and about halfway between the towns of LaGrande and Baker City.
The nearest lodging is in North Powder, a very small town right near the freeway, 19 miles from the ski area. The area is definitely cowboy country. Once you get out of the mountains, it's spotted with cattle ranches and hay farms.
Great snow
Anthony Lakes, at 7,100 feet, has the highest base-level elevation of any resort in Oregon or Washington. It's at the northern edge of the Elkhorn Mountains, and gets a lighter, fluffier snow than is typically found in the Cascades. Anthony Lakes offers skiing and boarding, as well as backcountry cat skiing . You have to be somewhat experienced to take that on, and when I was at Anthony Lakes, I wasn't quite there yet. Next time I get out there; it's definitely on the list.
Beautiful scenery, varied track
The Nordic Area at Anthony Lakes offers 29 kilometers of groomed track and trails that offer every level of cross-country enthusiast something. You can take a leisurely loop around the lake, or go into some areas with serious challenge.
If you live in the Portland area like I do, and are used to going up to the Mount Hood ski and board areas for an afternoon or evening, you should consider a longer trip to Anthony Lakes. It's about a 4 1/2-hour drive from Portland, but on the plus side, it's all freeway except the last 19 miles.
