, He talks about staying up for days working on his lyrics. He seems so dedicated, it’s almost enough to make you worry about him a little.
The second track, “Die Like a Rock Star,” doesn’t help. In it, he name-checks various celebrities that have died young: Chris Farley, River Phoenix, Brittany Murphy, Heath Ledger... “ I got that Kurt Cobain kinda mind-frame.” doesn’t refer to porn -- it’s the Roman numeral for 30, the age Danny Brown just turned. Maybe his life experience has brought him some space for both internal and external reflection; maybe it's brought some real wisdom. He certainly isn’t about to sell his soul for a quick buck or a hit song. “Radio Song” pokes fun at the concept of selling out and those who are quick to snatch the check: “They don’t care about music, just first-week sales,”
If you’re a fan of intelligent, unpredictable Alternative Hip-Hop, you’re probably in it for the rapid-fire flow of ideas, not to mention the barbed jokes. Great rappers all seem to have a good sense of humor and the ability to turn a phrase in an unexpected way. Danny Brown delivers in all these departments, referencing SpongeBob
All in all, Danny Brown has got the best elements of an artist: self- and social-awareness, passion for and precision in his craft, and the talent for stepping back and laughing at the things that frustrate him. There's a sense that he takes his work and subject matter (if not himself) totally seriously. He knows where he's heading. His direction is convincing.
