City contends with crumbling walls
While the City of Pottsville is celebrating the removal of one community eyesore - the 15-by-30-foot hole at 200 E. Norwegian St. which was capped last week - it's still working to repair two chinks in its infrastructure.
There's a fallen railroad wall on South Centre Street and a collapsed brick wall bordering Adams Street.
While progress has been made in both cases, City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said Wednesday, timetables for the repairs have not been set.
A 15-foot section of brick wall in the city's Greenwood Hill section collapsed April 12. It's in the backyard of 18 S. Jackson St., home to Nancy Murphy-Julian. It stood 14-feet high and was 9-inches thick. When it fell, the wall hit a one-story shed owned by Murphy-Julian, caused slight damage to its side and forced the shed to move two inches.

Once an engineering firm submits a repair plan to the city for review, Palamar said the project to repair the brick wall behind Murphy-Julian's home can get under way.
Murphy-Julian had hired Lehigh Engineering, Pottsville, to do the design work.
"Now we're just waiting," Murphy-Julian said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the parties are still discussing how the repair work will be paid for.
Earlier this year, city officials and Murphy-Julian's attorney, Gretchen D. Sterns, Pottsville, were working to determine what was private property and what was owned by the city.
Sterns was out of the office and unavailable for comment Wednesday.
In the collapse, the north border of Adams Street sustained cracks and the city is making plans for repairs.
"We have to wait to see what happens with the wall before we can do anything with the street itself," Daniel E. Kelly, city superintendent of streets, said Wednesday.
