In style: Bride's pride
For most bridal-gown designers, the main aim is just to make a gown that impresses a woman enough to ensure she wears it on one of the most important days of her life. Now take that pressure and multiply it about 100 million, and perhaps you'll find yourself in the exciting shoes of the aspiring wedding-dress designers in the UAE who have entered a competition held by Dubai's Frost bridal boutique to find the dress designer of the future, judged by none other than Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman.
"Marchesa is all about the stunning dress, the original," says Dima Khalaf, co-owner of Frost, on Jumeirah Beach Road. "I call her bridal redefined — she has redefined what a bride should wear on her wedding day. I've been in the industry for five years now and I've never seen anything else like it. Nothing."
British designer Chapman, with partner Keren Craig, founded the label in 2004 and has won over not only brides around the world, but also celebrities, who regularly wear her non-white designs on the red carpet. To be judged by one of the fashion world's hottest and most respected designers is nothing less than "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity", says Khalaf, who started Frost four years ago after being unable to find the kind of wedding dress she wanted for herself.
The store now stocks subtly elegant yet fashionable bridal wear from designers such as Marchesa, Carolina Herrera ("no one can beat her ballgowns", Khalaf says), new addition Oscar De La Renta and the "pretty, pretty" line, Christos.
Hopefuls have until September 25 to submit their sketch of a wedding dress with the theme "vintage redefined".
"We all have a certain idea for vintage. You are probably thinking of a certain type of beadwork, colouring, something like what Kate Moss wore [for her wedding]. That's not what I have in mind. I want people to redefine. I don't want it to be simply something old and classic. I want them to put their own take — so it looks vintage but at the same time you don't look like you came from another era.
