Family Forum: Steering Your Teen Driver Toward Safety
Getting a driver's license is a dream come true for most teenagers. But for many parents, it can be a nightmare.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in this age group. And per mile driven, young drivers aged 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to the accident.
Despite the grim statistics, there are many things parents can do to help teens make better choices while learning to drive and after obtaining their license.
The key security
Jim Bove, host of community outreach for the Redmond Police Department, said the No. 1 issue that causes accidents among drivers of adolescence, and the drivers of many adults, is the distraction caused by texting , talking to passengers, eating and other activities.
"Accelerate (is) just another concern because many children do not understand the potential consequences for drivers and pedestrians more," said Bove.
Parents can be the best models when it comes to giving a good example of the distraction-free driving, said Bellevue police Officer Rob Wood, head of police in Bellevue Factoria community station. Parents should take the time to ride with their children, both during the investigation and conduct once they get a driver's license, he said.
"Every time you drive with them, you teach them something valuable," says Wood.
One of the skills taught his children Bois was how to drive in inclement weather. On a snowy winter day, he said, he pulled out of a parking lot on the ground just to learn to control a car safely while driving on snow and ice.
Phil Goodman, the director of Redmond-based service delivery for school SWERVE conduct, agrees with Wood that parents should take their teens to drive in inclement weather to gain the skills they need to be safe drivers.
New Bartell Drugs opening at Factoria Village on Sept. 13 - Bellevue ...
Bartell Drugs will open its 59th store September 13 at Factoria Village, formerly Loehmann's Plaza, in Bellevue's Factoria neighborhood. Located at 3620 Factoria Blvd. SE, the new 15,000 square-foot Bartell's store was formerly the Loehmann's clothing store.
The grand opening kicks off Monday, September 13, with a ribbon-cutting scheduled for September 14 at 10 a.m. as members of the Bartell family, employees, vendors and local dignitaries celebrate the store's opening and Bartell's 120th anniversary.
"We have searched for several years for the right location in the Factoria neighborhood. I am pleased that we will at last have a store there to serve the needs of those that asked for us," said George D. Bartell, Chairman and CEO of the family-owned chain. "I'm excited to bring our brand of great service and value to a great neighborhood."
The new Factoria-Bellevue store will feature a new full-service pharmacy, which will offer clinical care services and an international travel clinic in addition to traditional pharmacy services. Product offerings will include many natural and organic health, beauty and cleaning products, nutritional supplements, a large selection of convenience foods, greeting cards and more.
It will feature Bartell's exclusive PixPlus department-offering digital print kiosks, a broad selection of camera and sound electronics, on-site one hour photo finishing and a passport photo center. The new store will also include a selection of beer and wine featuring many local Northwest wines.
Utilizing alternative energy technology, this will be the first Bartell's location to have a solar energy system to supplement conventional power sources, with panels on the face of the building and on the roof.
The new store is expected to employ approximately 20 people.
Founded in Seattle in 1890, Bartell Drugs owns and operates stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. Family-owned and operated, it is the nation's oldest drugstore chain.
